SPEL Limited Q1 FY2027 Results: Earnings Rise 37% as Margins Improve

SPEL’s Sep 2026 quarter delivered 25% sales growth, better margins and 37% higher profit, while receivables tempered cash conversion.

SPEL Limited (SPEL) started FY2027 with a materially stronger first quarter. In the three months ended September 30, 2026, sales rose 24.8% year on year, operating profit increased 33.1%, and profit after tax advanced 36.6%. The improvement was not just a larger revenue base: gross margin edged higher, administrative expense fell, and the effective tax rate declined. Cash generation remained positive, although it did not keep pace with the increase in earnings because trade receivables absorbed substantially more working capital.

Verdict

The quarter was strong on the core numbers. Revenue growth, modest gross-margin expansion, administrative discipline and a lower effective tax rate combined to lift earnings per share to PKR 1.88 from PKR 1.38. The balance sheet also stayed liquid, while total debt fell from the June 2026 year-end level. The main caution is cash conversion: operating cash flow grew only 6.9% against a 36.6% increase in net profit, largely because receivables expanded during the quarter.

This is a PASS WITH DISCLOSED LIMITATIONS. SPEL’s unaudited company-level filing gives a complete income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement for the current quarter, but it does not split the sales increase between volume, price, product mix or operating segments. Accordingly, the analysis explains the verified financial transmission without assigning an unsupported operational cause.

What improved

Revenue growth carried through to profit

Sales increased by PKR 584.3 million year on year to PKR 2.937 billion. Cost of sales rose by PKR 423.9 million to PKR 2.169 billion, a slightly slower pace than revenue. That produced PKR 767.9 million of gross profit, up PKR 160.4 million.

The arithmetic matters. Gross profit grew 26.4%, ahead of the 24.8% sales increase, lifting gross margin by about 33 basis points to 26.15%. This is a modest rather than dramatic improvement, but it shows that the larger top line did not require sacrificing gross profitability.

The filing does not disclose whether the revenue increase came from automotive components, packaging, pricing, volume or a different product mix. It would therefore be speculative to name a company-specific demand driver. What can be established is that incremental sales converted into gross profit at a slightly better rate than in the comparative quarter.

Operating leverage was stronger

Administrative expense declined 3.5% to PKR 123.9 million even as sales expanded. Selling and distribution expense rose 49.3% to PKR 33.4 million, and impairment loss increased to PKR 5.7 million from PKR 2.3 million, but these increases were more than offset by the larger gross-profit pool and lower administrative cost.

Operating profit consequently rose 33.1% to PKR 604.9 million, and operating margin expanded by roughly 129 basis points to 20.60%. This is the clearest quality feature of the quarter: the operating result improved faster than revenue before finance cost and tax effects.

Below the operating line, other income was broadly stable at PKR 30.5 million, versus PKR 29.7 million. Other charges increased 23.3% to PKR 48.3 million. The result therefore was not driven by an outsized jump in other income.

Tax helped net profit growth

Finance cost rose 30.9% to PKR 21.6 million, but remained small relative to operating profit. Profit before tax reached PKR 565.5 million, up 32.0%. Tax expense increased 24.8% to PKR 208.1 million, slower than pre-tax profit, reducing the effective tax rate to 36.80% from 38.93%.

That two-percentage-point reduction in the effective tax rate helped profit after tax grow faster than profit before tax. Net profit increased to PKR 357.4 million from PKR 261.6 million, and EPS rose to PKR 1.88. The tax-rate movement is visible in the accounts; the filing does not provide a note that isolates the reason for the change, so no further causal claim is warranted.

Debt and liquidity moved in the right direction

At September 30, 2026, SPEL reported current assets of PKR 4.973 billion against current liabilities of PKR 1.670 billion, implying a current ratio of about 2.98 times. That was essentially unchanged from 2.97 times at June 30, 2026 and indicates that short-term asset coverage remained comfortable.

Total debt, using the current and non-current borrowings reported in the accounts, declined to approximately PKR 694.9 million from PKR 900.0 million at June 2026. Short-term borrowings fell particularly sharply to PKR 68.0 million from PKR 286.6 million. Total debt was about 9.1% of period-end equity, which stood at PKR 7.675 billion.

What weakened / needs attention

Cash conversion lagged earnings

Operating cash flow was positive at PKR 454.8 million and covered net profit by about 1.27 times. However, it grew only 6.9% year on year, far behind the 36.6% rise in profit after tax. The comparable quarter had operating cash flow of PKR 425.6 million, or about 1.63 times net profit.

The working-capital bridge explains the gap. Trade receivables increased by PKR 320.2 million during the quarter, whereas the comparative period benefited from a PKR 309.7 million receivables decrease. Payables provided PKR 269.8 million of cash and contract liabilities added PKR 84.9 million, partly offsetting the receivables absorption.

The balance sheet points in the same direction: receivables rose 27.7% from June to PKR 1.449 billion, while sales for the quarter increased 24.8% year on year. Payables also rose 28.7% from June to PKR 947.9 million. This does not make the cash result weak—operating cash flow remained above net profit—but receivables collection is the clearest item to watch.

Higher selling costs and impairment

Selling and distribution expense increased much faster than revenue, while impairment loss more than doubled. Their absolute amounts remain modest relative to gross profit, so they did not derail operating leverage in this quarter. Repetition at the same growth rates, however, would make them more material over a full year.

Finance cost also rose faster than sales. The decline in period-end borrowings is encouraging, but the quarterly finance charge reflects average funding and timing rather than only the closing balance. A sustained debt reduction should eventually improve this line, but the current filing alone is not enough to quantify when.

Quarterly growth follows a softer full year

The longer view is less uniformly strong. SPEL’s FY2026 annual filing shows sales of about PKR 9.409 billion and profit after tax of PKR 1.137 billion, compared with PKR 9.633 billion and PKR 1.253 billion in FY2025. That equates to declines of roughly 2.3% and 9.3%, respectively. The strong September quarter therefore represents an encouraging start to FY2027, but one quarter is not yet enough to establish a new full-year trend.

AlphaGen model scores

These are AlphaGen model outputs, not figures reported by SPEL and not investment recommendations.

  • Alpha QoQ Score: 67.62
  • TTM Performance Score: 59.12
  • 3Y Business Perf Score: 96.42
  • Sector Leadership Score: 54.72

The combination is consistent with a strong latest quarter and very strong three-year business performance, while the trailing-twelve-month and sector-relative readings are more moderate. That distinction also matches the reported history: the latest quarter improved sharply, but FY2026 was softer than FY2025.

What to monitor next

  • Receivables and operating cash flow. The next statement should show whether the PKR 320.2 million quarterly receivables outflow reverses or persists, and whether cash growth catches up with earnings.
  • Gross-margin durability. The current 26.15% margin is only 33 basis points above the comparative quarter, so the next result will help distinguish a durable gain from normal quarterly variation.
  • Selling expense and impairment. Both grew faster than sales, albeit from relatively small bases.
  • Borrowings and finance cost. Closing debt fell 22.8% from June; the next quarter should reveal whether lower balances translate into a lower financing burden.
  • Revenue composition. A segment, volume or price/mix disclosure would materially improve the ability to judge whether the current growth is broad-based and repeatable.
  • Capital allocation. The board declared no interim distribution with this result. The cash-flow statement also shows PKR 93.9 million of capital expenditure and PKR 17.4 million invested in treasury bills during the quarter.

Bottom line

SPEL delivered a high-quality start to FY2027: sales growth was strong, gross margin edged up, administrative expense fell, operating margin expanded, and net profit increased more than one-third. Positive operating cash flow, declining debt and a near-3-times current ratio add balance-sheet support.

The main qualification is not the reported earnings result but its cash-conversion detail. Receivables absorbed a large amount of cash, and the filing does not explain the commercial source of the sales increase. The quarter is therefore a strong reported outcome, while collections and the durability of growth remain the key evidence to watch.
