Verdict
Arif Habib Limited closed FY2026 with a broad earnings improvement rather than a single-line windfall. Consolidated operating revenue grew 45%, realized investment gains rose modestly, and a fourth-quarter recovery in market valuations reversed the nine-month unrealized loss. Profit after tax increased 20% to PKR 1.180 billion despite a 29.5% rise in administrative and operating expenses and a 73.9% jump in finance cost.
The result is strong, but its quality has two layers. Brokerage, advisory and margin-financing activity built a larger recurring revenue base; investment disposals and fair-value movements remained important and more market-dependent. Operating cash flow also surged, although much of the cash release came through settlement-related payables, so the headline cash number should not be treated as a steady run rate.

What improved
- The core revenue base expanded: operating revenue grew much faster than realized investment gains, reducing the degree to which headline growth depended only on asset disposals.
- Fourth-quarter momentum accelerated: implied consolidated Q4 profit was about PKR 404.5 million, 79% above the comparable quarter, after subtracting the official nine-month figures from the full year.
- Market-value effects turned supportive: the nine-month accounts carried a PKR 73.0 million unrealized loss, while the full year closed with a PKR 46.2 million unrealized gain.
- Cash and balance-sheet capacity increased: consolidated cash and bank balances rose 65.7% to PKR 6.216 billion, while equity increased 27.0% to PKR 2.475 billion.
- The board raised the proposed annual cash distribution to PKR 12.50 per share, equal to roughly 69% of consolidated FY2026 EPS.
What weakened or needs attention
- Cost growth remained heavy: administrative and operating expenses rose 29.5%, reflecting the enlarged platform, people and technology base needed to support higher activity.
- Finance cost rose 73.9%, faster than both operating revenue and profit, as short-term borrowings and trading-related funding needs increased.
- Earnings remain market-sensitive: realized and unrealized investment gains still formed a material part of total income and can reverse with asset prices or portfolio decisions.
- The operating-cash surge was working-capital intensive: trade and other payables increased by PKR 2.589 billion in the consolidated cash-flow bridge, making cash conversion partly dependent on settlement timing.
- Balance-sheet scale brought larger obligations: consolidated trade and other payables rose 63.7%, and secured short-term borrowing rose 79.5%.
Core comparison: current period versus prior year
- Operating revenue — PKR 2.289 billion versus PKR 1.576 billion; +45.3%. Interpretation: brokerage, advisory, commodity brokerage and financing activity created the strongest top-line contribution.
- Realized investment gains — PKR 1.160 billion versus PKR 1.097 billion; +5.8%. Interpretation: gains stayed substantial but were not the main source of incremental revenue.
- Total income before other operating income — PKR 3.496 billion versus PKR 2.681 billion; +30.4%. Interpretation: stronger core revenue and improved fair-value movement outweighed slower realized-gain growth.
- Administrative and operating expenses — PKR 2.015 billion versus PKR 1.556 billion; +29.5%. Interpretation: costs broadly tracked the expanded income pool, leaving only modest improvement in operating efficiency.
- Profit before tax — PKR 1.669 billion versus PKR 1.350 billion; +23.6%. Interpretation: better income absorption outweighed the higher financing burden.
- Profit after tax — PKR 1.180 billion versus PKR 981.5 million; +20.2%. Interpretation: tax and levies absorbed part of the pre-tax gain, but net earnings still reached a new high.
- Total assets — PKR 10.936 billion versus PKR 7.177 billion; +52.4%. Interpretation: cash, short-term investments and client-financing assets drove a much larger operating balance sheet.
- Operating cash flow — PKR 1.969 billion versus PKR 520.2 million; +278.6%. Interpretation: cash improved sharply, but settlement payables were the dominant working-capital source. Official FY2026 result
What drove the result
A larger brokerage and advisory engine
AHL’s principal activities include equity and inter-bank brokerage, investments, IPO underwriting, advisory and consultancy. Its wholly owned subsidiary, Rayaan Commodities, adds commodity brokerage, which is why consolidated operating revenue is slightly above the standalone figure. PSX company profile
The nine-month report provides the clearest operating explanation available before the annual report. Management said brokerage and investment banking generated combined revenue of PKR 1.378 billion, up 29% year on year, supported by market-share gains, retail-client expansion, digital-platform enhancements and activity in IPOs, M&A and delistings. Official nine-month report
Transactions completed or advanced during the period included the Pak-Qatar Family and General Takaful IPOs, sukuk advisory assignments, and the Mitchell’s Fruit Farms acquisition. These disclosures explain why operating revenue rose faster than investment-disposal gains: client activity and capital-markets execution broadened the fee and commission base.
Investment gains remained a major earnings contributor
Realized gains on investments were PKR 1.160 billion, about one-third of consolidated income before other operating income. This is economically different from brokerage and advisory fees: realized gains depend on positions sold and their cost base, while unrealized movements depend on closing market values.
The full-year fair-value line improved notably after March. Consolidated accounts showed a PKR 73.0 million unrealized loss for the first nine months but a PKR 46.2 million gain for the year. AlphaGen calculates an implied PKR 119.2 million positive fourth-quarter swing. Nine-month report FY2026 result
That rebound helped implied consolidated Q4 profit reach PKR 404.5 million versus PKR 225.7 million a year earlier. It is a valid part of earnings, but readers should not assume the same market-value contribution repeats each quarter.
Costs, financing and taxation
Administrative and operating expenses increased by PKR 459.4 million. The nine-month report linked the cost expansion to investment in technology and human capital, while higher market activity also raises transaction-processing, staff and platform requirements. The implied cost-to-income ratio, using operating revenue, realized and unrealized gains plus other operating income, moved to about 52.0% from 50.8%.
Finance cost rose by PKR 63.3 million to PKR 148.9 million. Secured short-term borrowings increased to PKR 1.547 billion from PKR 861.8 million, and margin-financing receivables rose to PKR 475.1 million from PKR 270.4 million. The spread between financing income and the cost of funding, rather than either balance alone, is the relevant economic test. Official FY2026 result
Taxation and levies totalled PKR 507.6 million versus PKR 373.1 million. Consequently, profit after tax grew slightly slower than profit before tax. No exceptional revaluation of property flowed through FY2026 profit; the property revaluation surplus was transferred within equity after the related property balance changed.
Balance sheet and cash flow
A much larger liquid and trading balance sheet
Consolidated cash and bank balances increased to PKR 6.216 billion from PKR 3.751 billion, while short-term investments rose to PKR 2.659 billion from PKR 1.102 billion. On the liability side, trade and other payables reached PKR 6.653 billion. These are large balances because a brokerage carries client, settlement and market-exposure flows that can move sharply around reporting dates.
Total equity rose to PKR 2.475 billion from PKR 1.948 billion after profit and the prior-year dividend. Book-value expansion improves loss absorption, but asset growth outpaced equity growth; readers should therefore monitor leverage, settlement obligations and liquidity together.
Why operating cash flow needs interpretation
Net operating cash flow reached PKR 1.969 billion. Before working-capital movements, however, consolidated operating cash generation was PKR 345.4 million. The largest positive movement was a PKR 2.589 billion increase in trade and other payables.
Cash was partly absorbed by a PKR 372.0 million increase in short-term investments, PKR 383.6 million in advances and prepayments, and PKR 204.7 million in margin-financing receivables. This does not invalidate the cash result, but it shows that settlement timing and balance-sheet deployment—not profit alone—produced the full increase. Official FY2026 result
Dividend and corporate actions
The board recommended a final cash dividend of PKR 12.50 per share, or 125% of par value, with no interim distribution. The proposed cash outlay is approximately PKR 816.8 million based on 65.34 million shares, equal to about 69% of consolidated profit. The dividend remains subject to the normal shareholder-approval process; the annual general meeting is scheduled for September 25, 2026. Official FY2026 result
AHL paid PKR 10 per share relating to FY2025 during the current year. The higher proposed distribution is supported by stronger earnings and cash, but future payout capacity will still depend on market activity, capital requirements and the liquidity tied to brokerage operations.
Consolidated versus standalone
Standalone FY2026 profit after tax was PKR 1.177 billion with EPS of PKR 18.01, compared with consolidated profit of PKR 1.180 billion and EPS of PKR 18.06. The small difference shows that Rayaan Commodities contributed only modestly to group earnings in the period, even though it broadens the brokerage offering. Official FY2026 result
For comparability, investors should avoid mixing consolidated profit with standalone balance-sheet or EPS figures. PSX’s headline annual table is based on unconsolidated financials, while this analysis uses consolidated statements for the group view.
Risks and durability
- Market turnover risk: brokerage revenue depends on trading volumes, investor participation and AHL’s share of client activity.
- Investment-book risk: realized gains may be difficult to repeat, and unrealized gains can reverse before securities are sold.
- Funding risk: higher short-term borrowing raises sensitivity to benchmark rates and collateral requirements.
- Settlement and counterparty risk: large cash and payable balances can move with client settlements, margin financing and clearing cycles.
- Operating-cost risk: technology and talent spending must generate enough durable fee revenue to prevent cost-to-income deterioration.
- Deal-pipeline risk: IPO and advisory fees are episodic; mandates can be delayed by regulation, market conditions or issuer readiness.
- Tax risk: changes in the treatment of capital-market income, levies or final-tax regimes can materially affect net profit.
What to monitor next
- Equity and commodity brokerage revenue growth relative to market trading value and volume.
- Advisory and investment-banking pipeline conversion, especially completed IPO, M&A and debt-capital-market mandates.
- Realized versus unrealized investment gains, with recurring fee income kept analytically separate.
- Administrative cost growth and the cost-to-income ratio after recent technology and staffing investment.
- Finance cost, secured borrowing and the economics of the margin-financing book.
- Operating cash flow before and after working-capital changes, especially trade payables and securities settlements.
- Cash, short-term investments and liquidity available after the proposed PKR 12.50 dividend.
- Standalone versus consolidated earnings contribution from Rayaan Commodities.
