Verdict: Murree Brewery Company Limited delivered a stronger FY2026 bottom line than its 12.0% sales growth alone suggests. Revenue reached Rs31.996 billion and profit after tax rose 16.2% to Rs3.790 billion, even though full-year gross margin slipped modestly because cost of sales grew slightly faster than revenue. The improvement came further down the income statement: selling and distribution expense fell, operating profit grew faster than sales, and the effective tax burden eased. The derived fourth quarter was especially strong on profit conversion despite only modest sales growth. The counterweight is cash conversion: through March 2026, inventories and tax payments had absorbed most operating cash, so the full annual report will be important for judging how much of the accounting improvement translated into year-end cash. Reporting period: Year ended June 30, 2026, on the company’s standalone basis. PSX officially listed the FY2026 financial result on September 18, 2026. A company filing before the board meeting stated that the board would consider the annual audited financial statements, but the FY2026 annual report and independent auditor’s report were not yet available on the company’s public financials page when this analysis was prepared. The full-year result is therefore treated as the officially announced annual result, while no audit opinion is inferred. Any Q4 figures below are derived by subtracting the unaudited nine-month March 2026 figures from the full-year result; they are not a separately reported or audited quarter. - Revenue increased 12.0% to Rs31.996 billion from Rs28.563 billion. Cost of sales rose 13.1% to Rs23.953 billion, so gross profit increased a slower 9.0% to Rs8.043 billion. PSX result announcement FY2026 result table
- Operating profit increased 14.2% to Rs5.193 billion. Profit before tax rose 12.2% to Rs5.978 billion, while PAT increased 16.2% to Rs3.790 billion. EPS rose to Rs137.02 from Rs117.92. PSX result announcement FY2026 result table
- Selling and distribution expense fell 6.8% to Rs1.667 billion, while administrative expense rose 13.3% to Rs900 million. The lower distribution burden helped offset the slight pressure at gross-margin level. PSX result announcement FY2026 result table
- Net finance income declined to about Rs786 million from roughly Rs893 million, meaning treasury income was a headwind rather than the reason for profit growth. PSX result announcement FY2026 result table
- The board recommended a final cash dividend of Rs14.50 per share. Together with Rs27.00 per share of interim dividends, FY2026 total cash dividend is Rs41.50 per share — unchanged from FY2025 despite higher earnings. FY2026 result table FY2025 result
What improved
The clearest improvement was profit conversion below gross profit. Full-year gross margin eased to about 25.1% from 25.8%, because cost of sales increased slightly faster than revenue. That matters because it rules out a simplistic ‘higher sales plus wider production margin’ explanation. Instead, operating margin still edged up to about 16.2% from 15.9% as selling and distribution expense fell by roughly Rs121 million. The result therefore reflects tighter commercial-cost absorption as much as top-line growth. FY2026 result table
The year-end bridge strengthens that reading. Subtracting the nine-month accounts from the full-year result implies Q4 revenue of about Rs9.41 billion, only 1.5% above the comparable quarter. Yet derived Q4 operating profit rose about 12.7% to Rs1.32 billion and PAT rose about 38.0% to Rs1.10 billion. Selling and distribution expense in the residual quarter was about 19.7% lower year on year, while the derived effective tax rate also fell materially. Because Q4 is a residual calculation and can contain year-end adjustments, these movements should be treated as directional evidence rather than a separately disclosed management explanation. Nine-month report FY2026 result table
Profit growth also benefited from a lighter tax drag. FY2026 tax expense rose only about 6.0% while profit before tax increased 12.2%, taking the implied effective tax rate to roughly 36.6% from about 38.8%. That is one reason PAT grew faster than PBT. This is important for earnings quality: the underlying operating business improved, but part of the additional acceleration from PBT to PAT came from tax rather than operations. FY2026 result table
The company entered FY2026 from a position of improving demand and macro stability. In its nine-month review, management reported 17% sales growth, 12% gross-profit growth and 9% PAT growth through March 2026, while citing stable exchange rates, low inflation and falling interest rates as supportive conditions. Official PBS data also showed Pakistan’s large-scale manufacturing output grew 4.98% in FY2025-26. That broader industrial recovery provides context for demand, but it does not by itself explain Murree Brewery’s company-specific margin and cost movements. Nine-month report PBS LSM release
What weakened / needs attention
The main operating weakness is the slight full-year gross-margin compression. Raw-material, packaging, energy and other production costs are embedded in cost of sales, and in the nine-month accounts the cost base was already expanding: raw material consumed was Rs16.28 billion versus Rs14.15 billion a year earlier, while fuel and power rose to Rs1.65 billion from Rs1.43 billion. Those public interim figures help explain why revenue growth did not fully translate into gross-margin expansion. Without the FY2026 annual report, it would be inappropriate to assign the full-year margin movement to any single input. Nine-month report
Cash conversion was a second caution. For the nine months to March 2026, the company generated only about Rs99 million of net operating cash flow versus Rs849 million in the prior comparable period despite higher profit. Working capital absorbed Rs1.93 billion, led by a roughly Rs1.76 billion inventory build, and cash taxes and levies paid were about Rs2.37 billion. That does not prove weak full-year cash conversion, because the June-quarter cash-flow statement has not yet been published publicly. But it makes the year-end cash-flow statement one of the most important documents to examine when the annual report arrives. Nine-month report
Finance income also softened. Net finance income declined about 12% year on year, offsetting part of the operating improvement. A lower-rate environment is consistent with weaker yields on surplus liquidity, but the officially announced result does not provide enough detail to attribute the decline to one cause, so that relationship is best treated as an inference until the annual notes are available. Segments, products and the export story
Murree Brewery operates through three divisions — Liquor, Tops and Glass — and also sells non-alcoholic beverages, juices and food products, mineral water, and glass bottles and jars. The current full-year result announcement does not provide enough segment-level FY2026 detail to identify which division contributed most to the annual profit increase. The nine-month report does show that the business remained overwhelmingly domestic: exports were about Rs71 million against nine-month revenue of Rs22.59 billion, or roughly 0.3% of sales. PSX company page Nine-month report
That small export share is especially relevant because 2026 brought a potentially important strategic change. After a policy shift opened a route for alcoholic-beverage exports, the company began testing overseas markets; media reporting in April said shipments had reached markets including the United Kingdom, Portugal and Japan, with additional markets under evaluation. This is strategically notable, but it should not be mistaken for a material FY2026 earnings driver. The public nine-month numbers show exports were still tiny relative to the domestic revenue base. Nine-month report Export context
The next result cycle can therefore answer a much more useful question than whether exports are ‘good news’: whether the new channel begins to become economically meaningful. The evidence to watch is export revenue as a percentage of sales, any segment-level margin disclosure, the markets served, and whether export growth is incremental rather than simply shifting product away from domestic channels. Regulatory and tax items: recurring versus exceptional
Regulatory taxes remain a meaningful recurring part of the earnings equation. In the March 2026 nine-month report, the company disclosed current-year super-tax liability of about Rs441 million. It also said legacy prior-year super-tax amounts had been fully paid to FBR in installments and that no prior-year super-tax liability remained pending. That makes the current-year charge part of the ongoing tax framework rather than a surprise one-off, while the settlement of older balances reduces one historical uncertainty. Nine-month report
The beverage industry’s commercial-use water tax is another unresolved issue. Management disclosed that the Supreme Court had announced a Re1 per litre charge that was subsequently reduced to Re0.25 per litre through Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa legislation, while an industry review petition remained sub judice. Murree Brewery’s Tops and Murree Sparkletts Hattar operations had paid about Rs3.5 million at the reduced rate through March. The current amount is small relative to group earnings, but the final legal outcome matters because it could change the recurring unit economics for water-intensive beverage operations. Nine-month report
There is no evidence in the officially announced FY2026 result that a single large disposal gain or similar exceptional item drove the year’s PAT growth. The more defensible decomposition is: higher revenue, slightly weaker gross margin, lower distribution expense, modest operating-margin expansion, lower net finance income, and a lighter effective tax burden. Any further one-offs should be assessed when the annual notes become public. PSX result announcement FY2026 result table
Dividend and capital allocation
The Rs14.50 final dividend brings FY2026 cash dividends to Rs41.50 per share, exactly the same total as FY2025. Holding the dividend flat while PAT and EPS rose means the payout ratio declined. That is not inherently positive or negative; it indicates that the board did not pass the full earnings increase through to cash distributions. The annual report will be useful for understanding whether the retained portion is being directed mainly toward working capital, capex, liquidity buffers or other corporate priorities. What changed versus the historical pattern
The latest result extends a multi-year rise in the scale of the business. Official PSX historical financials show revenue of roughly Rs23.8 billion in FY2024 and Rs18.6 billion in FY2023 before reaching Rs28.6 billion in FY2025 and Rs32.0 billion in FY2026. PAT has also moved materially higher over that period. But the FY2026 pattern is more nuanced than simple operating leverage: gross margin softened slightly, and the incremental profit was created by better expense absorption and tax conversion rather than a broad expansion at every line. PSX company page FY2026 result table
That distinction matters for the next cycle. If sales growth remains modest, another large step-up in PAT would require either renewed gross-margin support, further operating-cost efficiency, a more favorable tax mix, or a meaningful new revenue source such as exports. Conversely, if distribution costs normalize upward or working capital continues to absorb cash, headline earnings growth could look less impressive even with continued top-line expansion. What to monitor next
- Full-year cash conversion: the FY2026 annual cash-flow statement and closing inventory position, particularly after the Rs1.76 billion inventory absorption seen in the nine-month cash flow. Nine-month report
- Gross-margin direction: whether production-cost growth begins to run below revenue growth after FY2026’s roughly 70-basis-point gross-margin compression. FY2026 result table
- Export scale: whether overseas shipments move beyond an early-stage contribution and become visible in revenue or segment disclosure. Nine-month report Export context
- Distribution discipline: whether the FY2026 reduction in selling and distribution expense proves structural or simply reflects timing and year-end adjustments. FY2026 result table
- Tax and regulatory exposure: current-year super tax, the water-use tax litigation, and any changes to beverage-sector duties or levies. Nine-month report
- Dividend coverage and retained cash: whether earnings growth begins to translate into higher distributions or remains retained for working capital and investment. FY2025 result FY2026 result table
Bottom line
Murree Brewery’s FY2026 result is stronger than a simple 12% sales-growth headline, but for a specific reason: the company converted a modestly weaker gross-margin profile into faster operating and net-profit growth through lower distribution costs and a lighter tax burden. The derived Q4 bridge points to particularly strong profit conversion at year-end, although it should not be treated as a separately reported quarter. The most important unresolved question is cash: nine-month working-capital absorption was heavy, and the full annual cash-flow statement was not yet publicly available. Exports add a genuine new strategic option, but the disclosed nine-month contribution was still too small to call them an earnings driver. The next reporting cycle should show whether better operating discipline, cash conversion and the new export channel can reinforce one another.
